It's sad but true -- there's never been a "true story" ever put on the big screen or on television. Certain liberties have to be taken for fact-based tales to make the transition from real life to celluloid.

The only question is whether there's enough fact mixed up with the fiction to make these concoctions palatable for consumption.

BOYS DON'T CRY --***1/2 --...

Already we've seen "The Hurricane" come under considerable scrutiny for its glaring historical inaccuracies, while "Boys Don't Cry" has raised a much-smaller stink for similar transgressions. The reason is, "The Hurricane" muddled its story too much with Hollywood-isms -- plot contrivances that could have come out of a TV movie-of-the-week -- and was only redeemed somewhat by Denzel Washington's powerful lead performance.

On the other hand, the haunting drama "Boys Don't Cry" may play fast-and-loose with reality, but it's to the benefit of the story. What's perhaps most surprising is that it comes from a filmmaker, Kimberly Peirce, with only a handful of short works to her credit, and that it hinges on an unproven lead actress, Hilary Swank from TV's "Beverly Hills " and "The Next Karate Kid".

Trying to pass herself off as a boy and calling herself Brandon Teenashe quickly ingratiates herself with the locals in nearby Falls City. The two introduce Brandon to the joys of Falls City life, which includes bumper-surfing and high-speed highway high jinks.
